General information

The Czorsztyn distric

The Czorsztyn district lies in the South part of Małopolskie province, in Nowy Targ area.

The district consists of seven towns. Maniowy is the seat of the Municipal Council. The other places the district comprises of are: Czorsztyn, Huba, Kluszkowce, Mizerna, Sromowce Niżne oraz Sromowce Wyżne.

The district area includes a vast part of the Pieniny Mountains as well as South slopes of the Gorce Mountains what has influence on the great diversity and therefore attraction of the lie of the land. Above all, the Gorce Mountains are gentle woody hills and rolling stream valleys.

They are completely different from the Pieniny Mountains which have a lot of ravines, are built from calcareous rocks making up attractive forms, have steep walls going down to the valleys.

The differences of heights between the highest and the lowest point in the cave can
reach even 500 metres.

The Dunajec gorge cuts through them. Apart from the Dunajec Gorge, which can be seen thanks to organized raftings, there are other extremely attractive spots like Trzy Korony (Three Crowns) and Sokolica (The Falcon Peak) with beautiful views and Sobczański Gorge cutting deeply into the rocks.
Preserved folk culture elements of two etnographic groups make this small district area more attractive for tourists.

The district lies in two culturally separate areas of the Pieniny Mountains and the Gorce Mountains populated by highlanders from the Pieniny Mountains (szczawniccy) and inhabitants of the Podhale region. The latter ones have very specific folk culture and art.

Highlanders from Pieniny live in Czorsztyn, Sromowce Wyżne and Sromowce Niżne. The other etnographic group in the Czorsztyn district, highlanders from Podhale, live in Mizerna village, Maniowy, Kluszkowce and Huba.

In respect of quantity, quality and the diversity of touristic values, the Czorsztyn district is a rare example of a situation where on a relatively small area there are so many outstanding attractions, both natural and cultural, made by a human.
